We have a harvest Sitex HH-300 hands on board our vessels at all times and our Uniden mounting base. The Sitex very well done "Rubber Ducky" antenna to speak at a distance of about 5 to 7 miles off the coast to other yachts and marinas.

If you communicate on your handheld to your handheld, is about three miles from the beach is waiting.

I agree with the views, it depends on a handheld, that the only means of radio communications.

Hope this helps?

technical answer is: a marine VHF radio in the so-called line of sight .... that the Earth bends the radio waves transmitted directly or .... Performance is important to some degree, but you can talk to someone on the moon with 5 watts of power ..... I would say, a handheld with 5 watts is only good for about 2.5 miles the best .... Show me my base station of 25 watts with an antenna, 60 meters in the air and speak about 30 miles off the coast, but about 15 miles inland .......
